In Queen Charlotte Sound at Lochmara Bay
You can find a lodge where the Punga people play
Carved deep into the trees with eyes that shine so bright
They are beautiful by day but just wait until the night…
For when the moon is above and the stars are shining bright
The Punga people are ready… waiting they’ll give you quite a fright
Those shining eyes of paua will glint then blink and stare
And their ears carved in the sides every footstep they will hear
The geckos creeping up the trees will be wise and take heed
For they don’t want to be in the way when the Punga people stampede
The possums clamber up the trees and hide deep within the leaves
They peak silently between the fronds the Punga people never see
As the breeze comes from the sea caresses each Punga Man
It
tickles hairy nostrils and behold "Tihea Mauriora" I sneeze therefore I am
Great tree trunk limbs they stretch their legs begin to grow
Before our eyes – lo and behold it’s not the Punga People we know
They stomp away up the hillside along the ridge they travel
Each step sends tremors down below no one would dare to dabble
They roar and stomp, they shake and shout such a racket – you’ve not heard before
But as daybreak fast approaches there will be just one final roar
And then again quite magically the Punga People disappear
Melting back into their tree trunks was there anything to fear???
They sit there now quite harmlessly some even smile at you
But I know that’s not all they do and now…so do you…
